Difficulty level: Advanced
If you generally prefer girly to gory, Halloween can be kind of a bummer, dude. But this fault line cake – decked out in fluffy pink frosting, edible glitter, and a big old crack full of bloody bones and eyeballs – strikes the perfect balance between sweet and spooky.
TL, DR: this cake is cute and creepy, which is also what my exes say about me.

Preliminary Steps
Mix a double batch of vanilla cake batter and divide between six greased and floured 6-inch pans. For best results, use my hacks for making the best damn boxed cake mix. Bake according to instructions, then allow to cool on a drying rack. Once cakes are baked and cooled, horizontally cut the top of each layer so it’s completely flat. Check out this video to see exactly how I get flat layers .
Prepare the pink vanilla buttercream recipe [link] after layers are cooled and cut so you can start decorating right away. I don’t recommend making buttercream ahead of time because it takes more time to thaw it out than it would to make it on the spot.
DECORATION
1. Place the first cake layer on a decorating turntable.
2. Using an offset spatula, dollop a little bit of frosting on the cake board & smooth in the center as your cake glue.
3. Form a smooth layer of buttercream on top of the first vanilla cake layer, about ½ inch thick.
4. Add second vanilla cake layer, frost top with buttercream
5. Repeat for the third, fourth, and fifth layers
6. Stack the 6th layer, then frost the crumb coat with buttercream, smoothing the surface with your cake scraper.
7. Apply Fancy Sprinkles Bloody Eyeball Candies and Bloody Bone Candies to completely cover the middle two layers of the cake in a random order. See video for reference. Refrigerate for 10 minutes to set the candies and the crumb coat.
8. Frost the top of the cake to get a smooth surface, allowing any excess frosting to fall over the sides
9. Take a pastry bag full of buttercream and pipe wide, flat ribbons of frosting around the surface of the cake above and below the candies.
10. Use your cake scraper to smooth the frosting above and below the candies, taking care not to get any frosting on the candies, so they appear inset, as if inside a wide ‘crack’ (aka fault line) in the cake.
11. Refrigerate cake for at least 30 minutes to set the buttercream. This will make it easier to decorate. You want your buttercream super cold and hard to make sure glitter distribution is even.
12. Dip the Fancy Sprinkles Sprinkle Blending Brush, in your pink edible glitter and lightly brush the entire frosted surface (excluding the candy ‘fault line’) with glitter with a very soft tapping motion. Use extreme care not to disturb the surface of the buttercream frosting.
Bam! You’re done!
